Open Directory - Popular Search Engines
home > SEO resources > seach engine 101 > popular search engines

The Open Directory is also known as “The Mozilla Directory” which is where its URL www.dmoz.org (directory Mozilla) comes from and the .org designation showing its non-commercial base.

It is one of the largest human-powered search directories today.

Formerly known as GnuHoo, it was launched in June 1998 and was acquired by AOL Time Warner-owned Netscape in November 1998. Netscape also owns the open source Mozilla browser, hence the tie-in. Netscape made a commitment that anyone would be able to use information from the directory through an open license arrangement.

While you can search at the Open Directory site itself, this is not recommended as all you’ll get are results indexed in its database from its editors, albeit thousands of them. Without a secondary source of results from a crawler-based engine, relevancy suffers.

That’s not to say Open Directory isn’t valuable and the best way to maximize that value is by accessing Open Directory through Google’s version, the Google Directory. Google’s enhanced relevancy algorithms and better link analysis improve the search results as does its PageRank order, which lists the most popular sites based on analyzing links from across the web first.
