Google (www.google.com)
has a well-earned reputation as the top choice for searching the Web. Google’s
crawler-based search engine provides comprehensive coverage of the Web and
great relevancy. This is most people’s first stop searching for results
on the Web.
A big part of Google’s strength is in letting you search for more than
just web pages. Clicking on any one of a series of “tabs” across its
search bar lets you search for images, Usenet newsgroup discussions, the latest
news from more than 4,500 news sources compiled completely by a newshound robot
and additional information through the Open Directory.
Additional features include catalogue searching and product searching (www.froogle.com).
Google has also developed an impressive solution to running up against the
“dead link” or “page not found” responses by offering
a cached or archived view of pages that are no longer live. Another feature to
speed searches that often go awry through typographical errors is an intuitive
spell checker that corrects your mistakes and then automatically initiates the
search with the correct terms.
Superb spell checking, easy access to dictionary definitions, integrated stock
quotes, street maps, telephone numbers and other baseline information needs are
al part of Google’s strong service offering. It’s no wonder many users
have downloaded the Google
Toolbar to add to their browser make searching even quicker.
Google’s search prowess is so widely accepted that Google’s unpaid
editorial search offering is used to provide search results to a number of other
search engines. Google also has a cost-per-click
program called AdWords that discreetly places paid ads on Google as well as to
a number of partner sites.
