HotBot - Popular Search Engines
home > SEO resources > seach engine 101 > popular search engines

Searching on HotBot (www.hotbot.com) provides a user a smorgasbord of search results from four of the Web’s most popular crawler-based search engines: AllTheWeb.com, Google, Inktomi and Teoma. We say smorgasbord because HotBot is not a meta search engine, which would blend all the results from the search into an orderly single set of results. HotBot will give you four sets of results and you’ll have to pick your way through them – much like at a buffet table.

HotBot is very fast and it will still save you having to execute four separate searches to get what you’re looking for.

HotBot’s four-in-one approach is a relatively recent change, coming into play at the end of 2002. For its first eight years until then, HotBot had a solid reputation as a leading search engine.

The "4-in-1" option at HotBot was introduced in December 2002. However, HotBot has a long history as a search brand before this date. HotBot was well known among serious searchers the comprehensive, high-quality search results provided by Inktomi.

HotBot, always looking to stay ahead of the pack, switched to Direct Hit for primary result listings in 1999, technically a good move, but instead of staying ahead of the pack, it left it one step behind as this switch came at the time Google launched. Google soared and HotBot lost some of its user base.

Furthermore, Lycos had purchased HotBot as part of its acquisition of Wired Digital a year earlier. Lycos (now Terra Lycos) was more focused on portal development that search engine improvements, something that changed for the better in 2001, resulting in the “new” HotBot we see today.

One thing that has carried through from its inception in 1996 is the bright, almost garish colors and funky-looking interface – always a big part of the HotBot brand.
