Inktomi - Popular Search Engines
home > SEO resources > seach engine 101 > popular search engines

Inktomi is the second-oldest crawler which was an experiment at University of California at Berkeley before going commercial in 1996. Inktomi’s first customer was HotBot a few months later. It was from that point that Inktomi realized the greater potential was in providing the technology to other search engines instead of its own branded search engine interface.

Having slowly fallen behind rivals Google and AllTheWeb.com, Inktomi started a series of competitive upgrades in 2002 and was then purchased by Yahoo! in 2003. Inktomi providea search results to Yahoo! and to Yahoo’s competitor MSN Search, but it is expected that relationship will end as soon as Microsoft is ready to re-launch with its own crawler-powered search results in 2004-2005.
