Lycos (www.lycos.com)
falls into the web search pioneer category as one of the earliest players dating
back to 1994.
In April 1999 Lycos ceased to use its own search technology and switched to
using AllTheWeb. While the perennial
argument comes up as to why use Lycos instead of AllTheWeb, this is another example
of what licensees do with technology to try and get a leg up on their suppliers.
Fast Forward is a feature that takes the results and packages them
in multiple views and provides several options. You’ll find the search results
on one side of the screen and the actual pages found listed on the opposite side.
Lycos then adds a section of human-powered results from Open
Directory. If that’s not enough, then Lycos adds another section
that suggest related searches you might want to undertake to augment or refine
the search you just did.
Lycos is owned by Terra Lycos, a company formed when Lycos and Terra Networks
merged in October 2000.
