Microsoft’s MSN (Microsoft Network) Search engine (search.msn.com),
one of the most popular search engines by traffic volume; many users of Microsoft’s
Internet Explorer web browser have no idea they are using MSN Search when they
enter a query into the search bar. The ubiquity of MSN Search is what makes it
so popular, yet at the same time, so unrecognized.
But that hasn’t stopped Microsoft from doing what Microsoft always does
when it finds a technology popular with the computer masses – doing everything
it can to make its version number one. Given what Microsoft has achieved with
its Windows operating system, Office productivity software and Internet Explorer
browser – crushing all those before it and all competitors since –
there is good reason to fear Microsoft’s potential in the search engine
world.
To that end, 2003 was a major turning point in MSN Search evolution which
will end with Microsoft developing its own crawler-based search engine.
First, Microsoft dropped LookSmart
as its primary provider of search results for MSN Search. That left Overture as
the provider of paid search results and Inktomi to provide crawler-based results.
Microsoft has said that as soon as its search algorithmic or web-crawler technology
is developed, it will replace Inktomi. Microsoft will do that as soon as possible
because Inktomi is owned by one of Microsoft’s targets – Yahoo!
Microsoft says it is making all the moves to increase the relevancy of search
results. Improved relevancy means more satisfied users – and that’s
the name of the search game.
