Yahoo! (www.yahoo.com)
is the grand old man of directory or human-powered search engines, with real live
editors organizing web sites into categories from submissions.
But eight years after its 1994 launch, Yahoo! took a major change in direction,
by adopting to a web search facility powered by Google’s
crawler-based listings as its primary source of results.
So if I can use Google on Google, why would I use Google on Yahoo!?
First of all, it’s not the first time Yahoo! has partnered with other search
providers. Open Text, AltaVista Overture and Inktomi have all providing services
to Yahoo! at one time or another.
Second, Google had previously been Yahoo! “back up” partner. This
means that when a user entered search criteria on Yahoo! and its directory search
engine produced no results, Yahoo! then served up results from Google.
Third, Yahoo! now served up a hybrid of results that blend both the results
from Google and Yahoo’s directories Yahoo’s search results pages also
show Categories links which take you to a list of web sites reviewed and approved
by human editors.
In 2004, Yahoo! web search dropped it Google affiliation and adopted Inktomi,
a search URL database and search engine, which Yahoo acquired in 2003.
You can still do a search of just the Yahoo!
human-powered Directory through the Yahoo Directory home page to get both
directory category links and directory results created from the top web site matches
from all categories of the Yahoo Directory. Only sites which pay a fee will be
included in the Yahoo Directory's commercial listings upon an editor’s approval.
However, non-commercial content is still accepted for free.
