Direct Hit launched with a bang, winning the grand prize at
the 1998 MIT Entrepreneurship Competition. The search engine was lauded for breakthrough
search concepts in an increasingly crowded search engine market.
Direct Hit’s edge was that it based the relevancy and ranking of an Internet
site or web page on an analysis of all previous requests, searches and uses of
those sites by past users. This “Popularity Engine” meant that the
more people visited your site and the longer they stayed there, the higher your
ranking. The down side? Direct Hit was poor at identifying new sites or less-surfed
sites, even though they may have had more contextual relevancy to your search.
By the time Direct Hit was acquired by Ask
Jeeves in 2000 it had processed nearly one billion relevancy records.
