Now that’s fast! - 1999
home > resources > history of search engines

Researchers at the Norwegian University of Technology had been working on search and real-time filter technology dating back to the early days of the Internet. In 1997, that work was commercialized and Fast Search and Transfer (FAST) was founded.

FAST quickly went about targeting the corporate world with its very powerful search and retrieval technology and in a short time, was the enterprise search engine at companies such as Dell, Ariba, Cigna, AT&T, IBM and many others.

FAST also launched AlltheWeb.com, a public, free-access search engine which was the first engine to catalogue and index 200 million web pages. It has an indexed database that is head-to-head with Google in size. FAST calls AlltheWeb.com its “Public search technology showcase and R&D sandbox.”
