Entrepreneur Bill Gross’ idealab! Was one of the first true Internet
incubators, funding research into many different ways to develop online business
models.
One of those ideas was GoTo, a search engine and directory
that was not just built on having people pay for listings, but using an auction
format to have people and companies bid to pay to have the highest-rankings on
GoTo. This was the inception of pay-per-click
advertising. The companies agreed to pay GoTo a set fee every time a user
clicked on their site. The more your site was visited, the higher your company
would be ranked, but the more it would cost you to maintain the ranking.
