LookSmart – the Australian connection - 1996
home > resources > history of search engines

LookSmart crossed the Pacific Ocean to the U.S. in July 1996, with the formation of NetGet Ltd., a Delaware corporation formed to acquire the business and intellectual property of HomeBase Directories, a company formed in Australia by Evan Thornley and Tracey Ellery in 1995. At that time, Readers’ Digest Association was the majority shareholder.

For the next 12 months, work was focused on building one of the most extensive online directory services during which time NetGet was renamed LookSmart. The head office was relocated from Melbourne to San Francisco and by late 1997, the LookSmart directory was up and running and drawing significant amounts of traffic.

LookSmart became one of the most heavily-licensed directory services by other search engine providers and is one of the leading paid-insertion directories on the Internet.
