Microsoft redux - 2003
home > resources > history of search engines

Microsoft shook up whatever calm existed in the search engine world by announcing in late 2003 that it was investing in developing search services to challenge the supremacy of Google and other players.

In advance of the launch of a new search engine, Microsoft unleashed the MSNBot to index web sites. If there was any doubt that Microsoft was serious that was dispelled when the software giant dropped LookSmart as a search result provider for the current version of MSN Search. Microsoft was LookSmart’s largest customer accounting for 65 percent of revenues at the time.
