Sometimes a web search can be like pulling teeth, other times you feel like
you hit the jackpot.
But that winning feeling took on a completely new meaning when iWon
launched a search site in October 1999 that combined searching with the feeling
of playing an online slot machine. iWon isn’t really a search engine, but
a front end interface that lets users enter search criteria, then iWon’s
servers send out a search request to several search services.
The differentiator between iWon and the other sites is the marketing spin.
In this case, a chance to win a piece of $27 million a year ranging from daily
$10,000 prizes to $10 million on tax day.
Founders Bill Daugherty and Jonas Steinman call iWon a marketing company first
and a technology company second. With an initial $100 million backing from CBS
and a rapid rise and a loyal following, iWon quickly became one of the Internet’s
top portals. By the end of 2003, more than 250,000 people had claimed in excess
of $57 million in prize money.
