Some Web expertise, Teoma - 2000
home > resources > history of search engines

A team of scientists led by Professor Apostolos Gerasoulis at Rutgers University set out to look at the structure of the Internet for search purposes from a different perspective than other search engines.

The result was Teoma which means “expert” in Gaelic. Teoma was launched in April 2001 bringing a fresh face to the search engine scene. Teoma analyzes and views the Web in terms of communities, with a community being a group of web pages that are about the same thing or closely related to the subject. This is in contrast to ranking sites with the most links to them.

Teoma was acquired by Ask Jeeves in September 2001.
